My first week at Fawcett Memorial Hospital wasn't the most exciting. All I did was sort the different kinds of prescriptions into the right bins. Then, I would fill the boxes up in alphabetical order of returned medicines. It made me become familiar with all the different names of medications though. It might not have been fun and exciting but, I learned a lot and can't wait to learn more.
Being at Fawcett during the second week was great. At the beginning of the week I worked with the Pharmacist, Jennifer, and she walked me through patients checklist. She used those to check on her patients and make sure they didn't need any new medication or to see if they were improving. Also, I talked with her about college and what classes I should focus on.
On Wednesday and Thursday, I was showed what it took to make a TBN. Those are the IV's patients get when they can not feed themselves. They are full of vitamins, calories, fat, electrolytes, etc. You have to be in a sterile room so no bacteria can contaminate the IV. It was really interesting to see that side of pharmacy.
This week at Fawcett was ok. On Monday, I had to use the computer lab and research the Sympathetic system for Alpha-1 antagonist and Alpha-1 agonist. We were supposed to do a 5 minute presentation in front of the pharmacist, but never had the chance.
Thursday at Fawcett was crazy. They had important people in the pharmacy so we had to keep busy. I went on runs with the Pharmacy Tech Amanda. We had to go to all the floors and give the patients their new medications for that time.
Wednesday, I had to check the patients renal dosing. It was interesting because if it was too high or too low Jennifer had me switch it to something else they needed. It took the full 2 hours to finish all the patients she had.
This week so far has been alright. Monday and Tuesday were slow days so there wasn't a whole lot to do. No labels were coming in to fill so I talked with the pharmacist Oge and he explained a little further of having a career in pharmacy.
Thursday we got lunch with the pharmacy. They ordered Panera Bread, which was good. After that, we filled labels and talkedd to some of the pharmacy techs about different topics.
On Thursday this week, I went on runs with a pharmacy tech. Also, we celebrated some birthdays that were going on this week. We all had cake and then went on with what they had to do. I filled some labels, and talked to Jennifer as she did her job.
Monday and Tuesday in the Pharmacy were really slow. There was nothing to do so we ate pizza and chated. (: We did fill some labels and had to put the unused medicine away.
Thursday, Jennifer was out sick. So all I had to was yet again, fill labels. I went on runs with a pharmacy tech, amanda. I tried to help by putting stickers on a medicine bottle to be labeled.
This week at Fawcett was pretty fun. I helped Jennifer look at patients charts and I helped put away the PO for that week. After that, I filled labels and put away medicine that was returned to the pharmacy.
Today, I learned how to do Compounds. I had to mix three components together to make the certain medicine they needed. It was pretty fun because I've never learned to do anything like that before.
On monday, tuesday, and wednesday I had to look up research for a mini project Jennifer gave me. I had to look up details on Type II Diabetes. I did learn a great deal about Diabetes.
The other day was a fun day in the Pharmacy. We had a funny conversation with the Tech Ed. All there was to do was sort through the bins and help put away the returned medicines. Also, I filled prescription labels.
On Monday and Tuesday in the Pharmacy, it was ok. I, once again, filled labels. Also, we put away the returned medicines. It can be boring but, it does teach me a lot. For instance, where the medicines are located and how to pronounce them. I am learning a great deal.
Today, I started taking some pictures of the Pharmacy for my power point. There is so much information that needs to be fit in and a bunch of interesting pictures. After that, I bar coded some new P.O they got in.
Today, they brought Moe's into the pharmacy. We all just ate lunch and talked about our future in the pharmacy career. Also, i went on runs with the pharmacy tech.
All day today I had to put away medications. You have to look at the mg. and name to make sure they all match the right bins. It takes a long time but, I do learn more about the medicines.
In the pharmacy, it was the pharmacy tech Ed's last day. We all talked about his new job while once again, sorting the bins. It was pretty much just a nice relaxing day.
Since it was our last week in the pharmacy we didn't do too much work. Mostly Jennifer talked with us about schooling and which classes would be best to take.
My last day went well. We all had a good day just talking and looking at charts on the computer. I thanked everyone for helping me and teaching me everything. It was a good experience interning at Fawcett and i'm glad i got to learn as much as i did.
