My first week at glenallen has been amazing! I know now that I am heading into the right direction with teaching. Tuesday, I had helped the fifth grade class grade the forth grade's class FCAT practice tests. Mrs. Zairnicki teaches both a forth and fifth grade reading and language arts. After reading off the correct answers to them I then gave them a spelling test. I read them the word, the sentence with the word, then the word again. My best part of the day is when I first get into the classrooom and they say "Hi, Ms. Wines!" its the greatest! :)
Today at Glennallen was fun. I am also sharing my internship with a college intern, her name is Mrs. Brich. Today Mrs. Brich had taught the reading part of class. This was quiet and experience for me, I got the oppurtunity to see how to handle a classroom as an intern or a strater teacher. She had a hard time getting the kids to listen and cooperate with her, they started to goof off a little bit, but she didnt do anyhting to tell the kids no or to stop. It taught me that I need to stand my ground in front of the students, otherwise they will have a hard time repecting what I say or tell them and may not learn anything from me.
I missed going t o Glenallen yesterday because it was raining, and when I came into class today, my mentor, Mrs. Zairnicki had told me that my fifth grade boys had missed me. (haha) She had asked them why they were behaving so well today and getting all their work done and what makes today any differnet from the others, and one of the boys had said, "That's because there isn't anyone sitting over here today (pointing where i usually sit in their class)." I just thought it was the cutest thing! (haha)I missed them so much yesterday not going. :(
Also, I stay after school with them to help tutor kids from my two fifth and fourth grade classes. This has actually become really fun and joyable for me. I love getting to know them while also helping them succeed in school! :)
Today was fun friday for the students at Glenallen Elementary. They had switched classes today with different teachers, but only of their grade, so that way every teacher gets to see and know all the students in the grade they teach. It was pretty neat to see how other classes react with different teachers. After they all had switched, at 2:00 they finally got to have fun friday, which is them basically going out to the playground and doing whatever they want. I was playing football with all the fourth and fifth grader boys, but they had a hard time cooperating together, they are very competitive. It was fun! :)
Tuesday, the college intern that i also work with had a big observation wednesday. In order for her to get her teachers certificate, she must go through an observation that she must pass. I got to speak with her and see how she was going to plan her day and how to do it properly. It was a neat and helpful experience for me to see.
This week has been very slow. I have not done much but observe the class. I am learning though how to manage a classroom successfully. My mentor uses tab changes to make the student listen and pay attention while in class. Green means good, yellow is a warning, red is a mark in their agenda, blue is lunch detention, and black is missing fun friday. This seems to be very successful, the students do not like to get a tab change. It is a very good strategie.
Tuesday after break, I gave the fifth grade class their spelling words. it is a pret-test. I say the word, read the sentence to help define the word, then read the word again. My mentor, Mrs. Zairnicki gave them their spelling test too from last week, since it was Valentines Day they didnt get to take it. After she gave them their test, I got to grade their papers. They do really well, but I am surprised by how young and how less complex the words are, I forgot what it was like to be in fifth grade and just how young they still are. This is such a wonderful experience, and I am better understanding how to act and treat fifth and forth grade students.
I was only at Glenallen for Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday I had a really bad stomach bug. There isnt much to write in two days. The students are starting to become used to me, so they are not as excited to see me as much, but they still give me hugs when I first come in, which I love. I also do tutoring for this little Spanish boy in the fourth grade class, he has a really hard time with both English and Spanish since he only speaks Spanish at home, then English in school, it is tough for him, but i work with him everyday, and he is strting to get much better. :) i love being able to help him.
Yesterday, March 4th, I worked with the 4th grade class. I usually am working with the 5th grade, but a boy that I tutor needed my help with a science test. He is Spanish and he needs help to comprehend the English meanings. It was fun, I ended up giving help to all the little kids.
They strted a new set up this year where there are two rooms that have a door connected and on one side is a male teacher and the other is a female. And one class is 4th and the other is 5th so they switch between both classes, therefor getting 5th in the aternoon and in the mornings my teacher has 4th. It's pretty cool! :)
Today, March 5th, I am going to Glenallen because I didn't go Wednesday. Yesterday was Mr. Cheeseman's Birthday (I did not make up that name) and today the 4th and 5th graders planned a surprise birthday party for him. I brought them little treats in fro the party too.
Today is also Fun Friday, so i will have fun playing on the playground with them! :)
Today was a good day for me, I got to walk around with my sponsor and see the younger grades. Only kindergarten since that is what I want to do the most. I got to see one class practicing writing their numbers, another sing a 12 months song, and lastley having free time. I got the oppurtunity to talk to the teacher who was letting the children have play time and she had done this experiment with them where she had a big piece of paper and it had one object drawn on it, from there the kids were assigned to one paper, some all girls or boys and others mixed. They had to then take turns and fill in the space around it without talking or having negative comments. The group with only boys in it drew only things with pencil and had drawn things being blown up and having super powers, the all girls group had a wide variety of colors and had more gentle tactics. The groups that were mixed had both things in it, but the girls disliked the violence very much. It was very intersting to see how they think at such a young age. I still dont know what age group i want to teach, all I know is I am really passionate about elementary school and hope to find a grade level I am really interested in, otherwise I will do all of them at one point. :)
Last week, the class was working on biographies and had to create a collage of the things they are interested in. I'm not usually that involved with the class, but this time I was able to walk around the room and help them out. I learned a lot about the students that I didn't know before, it was nice. Most of the boys put things on it like cars, sports, etc and the girls had hearts, family, and girly things. I was surprised to find out that a couple of the girls shared the same interest in Twilight as me. I didn't expect them to have read and understand the books. It shows they come smarter as generations pass.
Other then the biographies...Ihaven't really done much. I basically observe how Mrs. Zairnicki handles the class and the strategies that work best. I also observe Mrs. Brich, who is a college intern. I learn a lot from her as well.
Tuesday, while I was at my internship, we had a lot of fun. I brought in my camera to take picture for my power point. They had too much fun with me while taking pictures, they wanted to look good for the seniors. lol I was more of a distraction for them that day, but I left at two so they were able to do some work. =]
Today at my internship, it was my last day. I brought them in cupcakes, for both the forth and fifth graders. It was very hard for me, because I'm going to miss them a lot. While I was leaving they all came up to me giving me hugs and saying they were going to miss me. How can you not miss that? =[
Overall, my internship was a great experience. I know I want to pursue a career with elementary teaching. =] This fall i plan to go to SCF for two years and start an associates degree for early childhood education.
It has been a week since I have been in my internship, and i miss the kids a lot. They would just make my afternoons with little stories of their days and hugs from the little girls. It's amazing to see how much kids look up to you being a high school student. I hope they grow up to be great students and successful.
