  1. Today was absolutely astonishing. There was a dramatic decrease in yelling, getting up and wandering, calling out, and rowdiness! Amazing difference from last week. The students were actucally answering the questions the teacher asked and I was surprised! I don't know if it was the weather that helped calm them because today was a gloomy rainy day. When I stay, I stay for 3 classes and all have improved in behavior and in focusing on their work. I have no clue what happened but it is definitely a great change. Only once in a while the students would call out saying "Whack-a-mole!" I don't know what that's all about but it's random and they have been doing this for the last days. Thery're all funny at times. I listen to their conversations like one boy said to a girl, "Do you really think I'm listening to you?" then she said, "Well I'm giving you the answers so..." he interrupted saying,"Oh, well them I'm listening now." They have improved in their attitudes but there are those few times. I've noticed from all the classes when I grade their classwork, homework, and tests that they are getting good grades. I think that maybe what they are learning they are picking up fast but they are actually doing their work. I'm shocked, this is a dramatic turnaround. I'm actually happy and hope that they will continue to keep up the good work. I've noticed one girl though who is always, always on task, paying attention and respectful. She is going to do well in the future. I feel sorry for her though when the majority of the class is disruptive but hopefully they won't go back to how they were.

  2. Today things have continued to go well. They didn't have to be reminded more than once to do what they're supposed to do. Also in homework and quizzes they have improved. I think it is the content of what they are learning. They probably are really getting it and there has been more involvement with the lesson. Today I have to deliver to one of the teachers on the same team a student's belongings and it was funny because a student said "Miss Teacher!" It's funny how they think I'm a teacher beacause I'm just approximately 5 years older than them. Also they all were saying hi. They haven't been as disruptive as usual. Mr. Munnell was saying that he was going to take one of their class stars away from the board if they do not behave which seems to have an affect on them. I didn't have time to ask what it was for because of the schedule today. It's Community of Caring every Wednesday and they finish class at a different time. I've noticed that it's hard to manage a whole group of kids that want to do what they want yet they come to school, at school you learn. I don't want to say school has become a babysitting center but even here at the high school as well as the middle school there are some kids that really make that statement true. They shcould separate students that want to learn from those that don't because it makes it harder on the ones that do want to do their work and care. As a teacher its hard to manage that, to keep others on task and to teach the lesson to make sure every student learns. Being a teacher is quite difficult. It's like having many children. I'm glad thinkgs have been going much better now though.

  3. Yesterday was "ketchup" day (catch up) Mr. Munnell was wearing a red shirt with the ketchup logo on it. I've never seen a shirt like that anywhere. Anyway, yesterday the kids had to catch up on missed work or work they didn't do. Mr. Munnell said they needed "ketchup" day because many students would fail. They don't do the majority of their work. He said that all his classes needed to catch up. But for those who were good and did their work will able to paly Math Bingo. I got to call out the points like B 4x8, G 5x9 and so on. I can't believe it but I over here them talking about how they don't care and the majority of students are misbehaving behind his back causing distraction. I caught a thief. There is this one studetn who always tries to steal mints from Mr. Munnell which is awarded to those who do what they are supposed to do. Obviously he doesn't which is why if he wants some he's got to steal it. They are a lot to handle. I can't understand why they find it so hard to just sit and do their work. Raise your hand when you need to go to the bathroom. If everyone were on task and behaving then there would be no problems. Mr. Munnell is always saying how he doesn't understand how hard it is to just sit down. They literally stand up and wander around teh class! It's nonsense. Hopefully they learn now what they need to do so they can be prepared for the future or else it'll all hit them in the face. Yet despite the craziness yesterday was still one of the better days.

  4. Yesterday was an ordinary day. The students were asking Mr. Munnell about referrals. One student asked what they were usually wrote up for. He said they were for physical hitting of other students and other behavioral topics. I graded papers as usual. It was actually more quiet than usual with the exception of a one time disturbance when Mr. Munnell asked them who they thought gave the most referrals. Instead of normally answering the question they all of a sudden started jumping up and down yelling Mr. Mitchell (the teacher next door teaching science) They said it so loud that he opened the door wondering why his name was called. Sometimes these kids surprise me with the things they do. It was quiet as I was grading papers and all of a sudden I walked into a zoo. But this time when Mr. Munnell told them and reminded them no yelling they actually listened this time! I also got to help out a student with math problems that he didn't complete on ketchup day yesterday. Something that I find funny that happened was that one student always likes to talk and make comments. This time he was making weird noises with his mouth and when Mr. Munnell turned around to tell him to be quiet he said, oh my throats itchy. It was funny the way he said it. I laughed but quickly recovered becasue I didn't want to support his behavior and covered my face with the papers that were in my hand. Mr. Munnell after he turned around smiled after he heard me and went back to the board. I guess he tries not to laugh at their excuses too.

  5. Yesterday there was a substitute. The students took a test and afterwards they were allowed to talk with their friends if everyone finished. The thing was that nobody can talk during the test otherwise it's considered cheating. The kids talked and talked. The substitute told them over and over and they just could not keep their mouths shut. The substitute did say that she would mark down whoever talks so Mr. Munnell can determine how to grade their test after I grade it, like additional points taken off. I don't understand how hard it is to just keep your mouth shut and take the test. It's not like they wouldn't be able to talk the whole time. They were shouting things like is number seven A? and so on. The sub was like that is called cheating and they were saying nonsense about how they were just asking a question. They don't take anything seriously! I know that I do not want to be teaching middle schoolers. They are so immature and you basically have to control every student and correct them consistently as if their parents haven't taught them right from wrong. I can't do that. You either wnat to learn or not, the only person that is in control of you learning is you so if they don't clean up their act they are going to go down! I feel sorry for them.

  6. Today I finished grading the quizzes and tests from all the classes. An incident occured where a student complained about another and it went down hill. The student complaining ended up arguing bad with the teacher. So much talking back! Non-stop even as he was leaving out the door to be sent to another room and told he was going to get a referral. As the student left another student made a comment and almost got himself in trouble. Seriously these kids are absolutely horrible or parents are not doing a good job raising their kids. Basically their generation is very rebellious and talk back and have no respect for anybody. Out of control kids. I don't know how parents raise them or if they even do because they make me not want to have kids. They are terrible! I'm sorry about my comments but you should see what the teachers have to deal with!

  7. Today was a casual day. I graded papers and tests that sort of stuff. I worked on my homework when I completed all the assignment Mr.Munnell gave to me. The kids were as usual. Rambunctious. I had to even tell a student that commomnly stood up to sit inihis seat, of course nicely, and he listened. This particular student though loves to lift up his shirt, he slways comes up with some ways to just lift up his shirt and he always flexes his muscles to the class. It's funny but then it's like indecent exposure and it's kind of annoying. Just keep your clothes on! Mr. Munnell also had to tell him all the time to keep his pants up. He would let them sag and stuff. Anyways many of the students always say sorry when they upset Mr. Munnell but they say it and don't mean it otherwise they would stop Mr. Munnell's reply to them is "You wouldn't have to be sorry all the time if you just do the right thing." or "I don't want you to be sorry, just do the right thing."

  8. Today was as usual although I didn't have much grading to do. Mr. Munnell didn't collect any work from the students today. I also want to mention that when I started writing smiley faces and comments like "Great Job!" I get more papers turned in since they participate more and the grades look a lot better for the majority of the students. I just thought that by doing that they would get some motivation to see the 100% on their papers, if they earned it. Looks like it worked somewhat. I remember the first time I started doing this, the students were like "Mr. Munnell why did you write fantastic job on my paper?" Mr. Munnell was handing back papers to the students that I had graded and so they thought he had graded it as usual but now Mr. Munnell said "Eva graded your papers, she has more time to write comments." That is true though.

  9. The other day I graded a few quizzes and since the middle school is having FCAT soon, the teachers are giving FCAT practice auestions and explaining rules and key concepts to help the students do well on the test. Mr. Munnell gave me the assignment of covering up the FCAt helper posters and any other academic posters on the walls that could help the students cheat on the test. I covered them and stapled paper packets afterwards. Still the students are very disruptive and don't seem to want an education. That's the majority. They are crazy little munchkins running around the campus, carrying each other on their backs and screaming through the hallways. It seems more like a zoo. I guess that's the age although the majority of my classmates and I in their grade had not acted like them.

  10. Today I helped another teacher with covering up posters for the upcoming FCAT since I didn't have anything to grade because FCAT practice is going on. Afterwards I supervised students taking some other FCAT practice that they didn't finish in the middle room. I had to keep them quiet and out of trouble because they were the naughty kids that are very disruptive all put in one room so I actually managed to keep them quiet and finish their work. That's basically all today though.

  11. Monday, I graded practice FCAT booklets. Not much before the FCAT test days. There have been misbehaving students and they are sent out of the classroom to another teacher's room. One of the things about that though is that when the misbehaving student is sent into a different teacher's room they bring their attitude and sometimes disturb the other students in that class. I don't understand how hard it is to not be disruptive and pay attention, do your work. These middle schoolers are going to have it hard in life. They are not prepared fo rthe future. They are not hard working at all. Maybe just a few out of the whole. It's disappointing to witness that.

  12. Today there wasn't much either. I grade 2 sets of work but afterwards I observed the students. I always listen to what's going on while I grade. I really don't like how the students are disrespectful. Mr. Munnell finally got really tired of their misbehavior so he sent any students that were bad out with a packet of math work. He gave a warning at the beginning of class. These kids disrupt other students. I still have a hard time to understand just why they can't behave. Life would be so much easier if they could not make it hard for themselves.

  13. Yesterday the students were learning about finding the area and stuff of three dimensional figures. Same old same old. I think that as a teacher you have a routine. You come to school with a lesson prepared and teach it to every class. I think that this internship has defintely helped me determine what I should plan on pursuing for a career. The students seem to not take school seriously and how their education can affect their future.

  14. Today I graded some papers, there hasn't been much as usual. I don't think I mentioned before but when I had one of those free days where there wasn't much to do, I volunteered to use my organizational skills to organize the middle/storage room. I don't htink I even mentioned that besides grading papers I get the recycables from the 4 teachers on the team. So I try to keep myself busy because I'm fast at grading the papers. I watch and listen how Mr. Munnell manages the students and teach them as they distract others and misbehave. It seems more of a training class like teaching them what they should do and what not to do over and over and over. I don't think they respect the teachers the way they should, then again, who knows if they even respect their own parents.

  15. Yesterday was ketchup day! Oh boy! whenever you get them playing review games they get wild! Mr. Munnell asked me if I still wanted to be a teacher, I said no, not anymore, but this internship has helped me greatly. If I didn't have this experience I wouldn't have known what I was in for. Nowadays aren't the same as the way things used to be before. There is a lot a teacher has to deal with. I mean I had to yell at a student to let go of another's hair. This guy was pulling this girl's hair, handful and I got so upset, I yelled and said the person's name because the teacher only has two eyes. They get so physically violent. It's absolutely ridiculous their behavior. I don't think I will ever understand. You seem to find a common theme in all my blogs, The kids are crazy! I really think its the age because the kids in my age group, I do not have the same experiences with. Anyways, I graded tests and I'm good at grading. I hope the students don't throw away their education, because they don't seem to be taking advantage of it. There are only a few select people that are ALWAYS good. And I admire them, for the courage to not sink down to the level of the rest of the class.

  16. Yesterday, I didn’t grade anything. Mr. Munell went over the tests that I graded. They asked questions in class. It was generally quieter and not so rambunctious today. I wish they could be more studious and mature but the only I can come up with is their age. But if you’re taught to not be disruptive and know its wrong then how can you continue to do wrong. I’m sticking to nursing and I thank all the teachers out there that work so hard teaching us students.

  17. So today I'm back from Spring Break at my internship and so are the middle schoolers. Back to the same yelling and chaos. One student was told to leave the room to go into another classroom for being so disruptive after the class was just told to settle down, but the student refused to respect the teacher and was sent out by security. These students make life so hard on themselves. Also I was grading papers on long division and the whole class didn't even complete almost a third of the work on the paper. One person completed half of the paper. It's not like they didn't know how to do it. They just don't apply themselves and slack. I still don't understand and don't think I ever will.

  18. I had more to grade today. I haven't been busy with much grading but today I had more than usual. I observed the class and listened to their conversations. It's hard to keep up with those kids. I mean the teacher is trying to teach and then you got so many distractors, them being the students. Then there are students nots paying attention to the lesson being taught and when the teacher assigns some sample problems they say they don't get it. Well if you listened the first time you probably would, you know.

  19. Monday was regular. Nothing out of the ordinary. I usually get to listen and watch some action. That's when the kids have authority issues. There are particular students that have a problem listening. The rest are all right. But there are certain students that just love to disrupt and do their own thing. I think they forgot what the purpose of school is for. To educate.

  20. So today I got to see some crazyness. Two students were sent out to go to two other teachers rooms separate because they were bein so disruptive. Instead one of the other teachers saw the action happening (caught them). The rooms are set up like a square with a middle room and each of the classrooms at the corners, the lines would be the hallways and so one of the teachers caught them jumping around crazy and running in the halls. I cannot understand how they find that at all appropriate to do while in school. Anyway, afterwards they were sent to the office. I mean seriously they were running around, crazy. How do they have the guts to do that, I don't know. obviously they musn't care.

  21. Monday, as a usual monday is. I graded papers and got to work on some of my homework because I finished. I also did some recycling. Listening to students be rebellious and disrespectful. Why can't they just listen and do what they are supposed to do. you come to school to learn not to argue with authorities. C'mon! What happened to treat others the way you want to be treated. I can't believe they have the nerve to talk back and argue you know.

  22. Tuesday now, I graded papers. wow teachers have a lot to do. From each class you have got to grade papers. Also I put their classwork in the gradebook. Worked on some homework. I have noticed that their is a group of boys in one of the classes that try to be similar and get in trouble. They are like "The Troublemakers" getting up walking around, talking, talking, talking. don't they see that Mr. Munnell is trying to teach. Such disturbance they cause and I think the rest of the student may find it distracting but I see that half the class is really paying attention.

  24. On Tuesday Mr. Munnell and I had a short discussion about how to get students to do their work and be respectful. There was even a teacher meeting for all the teachers in the school he said. They were all discussing earlier that day I believe. Anyways I jut told him, first of all, how CAN you get them to be respetful and listen to you if they don't even give that much to their parents.

  25. So today they were all taking tests and I was grading them. They had a substitute. Oh boy! There is a select handful of students that always are rude, misbehaving, and disrespectful. They would not stop talking during the test. Repetitively the substitue had to remind them to be quiet, so much talking back. (Sigh) I don't think anything goes through their heads. I had Mr. Munnell as my teacher before and the students in my class were nothing like the way they are now. I was in a more advanced class and I wanted to learn so we tried. This one class does not care and it shows in their work but there are a few that do try despite the fact that it's hard to learn in a learning environment as that. It shows in the grades. That's all I can say. The grades speak for themselves.

  26. Yesterday I got to take out the recycling and grade claswork and homework. I did most of my homwork in school and over the weekend so I didn't have homework that I could work on while at my internship since I had extra time. Instead I observed how each class behaved. Some classes are more behaved than the others. It also is affected by which trouble making students are all together in the same class becasue they tend to have a negative influence on the class.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Today there was another subdstitute and so will there be tomorrow. I graded the classwork sheets and there's going to be quizzes to grade tomorrow as well. The class before the trouble making class is not as bad. They are not as misbehaved as the next class. Evenn with 2 of the trouble makers of the group absent, there still were those boys who don't behave. If only they could be influenced by the students that did their work and respect others that's when you would be able to say that the class as a whole is a great class. It's just those few that don't care. How, I don't know. But they must not have been taught or refuse to want to take advantage of the opportunity they have now, here, a free education.

  28. So these are the last days I'm coming to my internship. Yesterday as I was grading the IOWA tests there clearly are some students that don't have a clue what they're doing and in contrast some that really do. The answers are all in multiple choice. I graded other work too. The classes are really loud and I have noticed how Mr. Munnell has to always everyday in every class to tell them to sit down and be quiet. That should be like, automatic. It doesn't help that they just came from lunch, getting all that energy and then having to sit but I come after their lunch so I can't compare the last classes to the previous ones.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Still grading the IOWA tests. There are like 63 questions per paper so it's taking a while. I have also noticed that today the class that is usually more quieter was noiser than the one that is usually noisier. Today is Tuesday. There's only two more days left of interning for me. Time flew by fast.

  30. Well the bright side of this is that you have come to a more stable disision for your future career that does not involve teaching middle schoolers.
