  1. Feb. 5th 2010 - Today we went out to venice pier for a fishing tournament that was being held by 4-H. I also got to meet the other intern that Keith Wilson has. Well there were a bunch of kids fishing, and it was extremely windy so it was hard to fish as it is and there were seagulls trying to take the bait off of the fishing lines/hooks by swooping down into the water and grabbing them. A seagull ended up getting a hook into it's beak and it tried flying away with it but the fishing line just kept going with him. The seagull ended up giving up on wasting his energy and fell in the water and looked...dead. Chad and Keith were too busy helping the other kids so I had to reel in the "dead" bird and bring it up to take the hook out of its beak. I never really got to see a seagull up that close, I was holding it in my hands and I ripped the hook out of its beak and put the bird down on the side of the railing. The bird apparently wasn't dead, just exhausted. So he stayed there for about 5 minutes and then he flew away and was fine. We ended up getting poured on by rain 15 minutes later and we had to pack up and leave. It took me 45 minutes to get off of the island of venice.

  2. Feb. 17th 2010 - Today I got to go to Keith's office and see what it was like. It was really just a bunch of cubicles put together and a lot of research was just laying all around. He showed me the telescopes he uses in his lessons that he teaches and the different specimens he had. I brought my Macbook Pro up to the office so that I could do my own research that he wanted me to do for him. (He's not too good at computer's) The first thing he wanted me to research was to find a step-by-step dissection guide on how to dissect a stingray. He said him and his team were looking for it for a while now. I went on the internet and used different keyword than what he was using and I found him one that was pretty interesting. The next task he wanted from me was to find him a site that sold Microscopic Pre-Made slides that had Parasites such as Different Diseases that affected humans as well as animals so that he could use them in some of the classes that he teaches cause his students really like them. The final thing I had to do was go on the US Census Bureau and find out the Demographics of Sarasota county so he could report them into the county to show that 4-H is keeping up to date with the population/Ethnicity ect..

  3. Feb. 18th 2010 - Today we went collecting! It was ugly outside, freezing cold and the water was cold. Me, chad, and Keith all went to Siesta Key and brought giant nets and buckets for his specimen collection at home. This was my first time doing it where chad has done it hundreds of times. So I just sat up on the seawall and watched them do it a few times and then I was planning on going in and doing it myself. Change of plans, it started to pour on us. It really sucked. They did end up getting a lot of different specimens like a few baby blue crabs and some sea horses. As an overall, it was pretty fun even though I didn't get to do anything.

  4. Feb. 19th 2010 - Today I didn't do much. I went to the office and helped Keith with his classroom by passing around specimens that he brought in. The kids were only age 5-9 so they were going crazy over the stuff. Keith had kids coming up and drawing different animals on the board that he had and the other kids had to guess what marine animal it was. If they guessed it right then that kid got to come up. Some kid tried drawing something but something happened and he had to leave in the middle of it. Then Keiths voice went out and the lesson had to end. It was pretty cool though to help teach about 75 little kids.

  5. Feb. 23 2010 - Today was just a work at the office all day kind of day. I ended up researching stuff up on Red Tide and how we can help it and also since there isn't a stingray dissection diagram in sight I decided to work on one of my own. It started on photoshop program on my mac but then it started to get pretty hard when I had to label every part inside of a stingray so I decided to put it off until we had more time. I had to leave early due to family issues.

  6. Feb 24 2010 - Another classroom day but this time it was with a bunch of high schoolers, not too fun. They were just messing around the whole time. I ended up having to take a jar of of a preserved shark from some kid cause he thought it would be cool to spill the preserving alcohol all over the table to keith made him clean it up and get out of the classroom. I always wondered how keith would handle stuff like that when he was teaching but I got to see it full force on this one kid. It was funny. The day ended up with the original teacher making the kid come in and apologizing for what he had done to Keith's preserved shark. He did it.

  7. Mar 18th 2010 - Today was really cool. We got to set-up Keiths station at the sarasota fairgrounds. I ended up bringing my moms SUV and helping them get a lot of the stuff from the 4-H office to the actual site. The only hard part about it was other people were setting up stuff too so it was really hard to get stuff around but we ended up doing it. It was basically bare when I got there. We set up science fair projects from around the county along with their Rabbit/Hen station where there was a rabbit the size of my dog there. My dog is around 70 pounds. Stayed there for about 4 hours setting it up with them then I left for dinner with the family. They probably handled the rest.

  8. Mar. 23rd 2010 - Today I went back to the fairgrounds. I've never been to the sarasota fair before so it was a pretty cool experience. Keith started off by showing me around like a tour guide to all the 4-H programs. That took about an hour then he had to go in and talk to people so he told me to feel free to roam around. I went around for a little while but a fair is pretty boring by yourself. So I left. Hopefully I can go back tomorrow and help Keith do stuff this time.

  9. April 8th 2010 - Today was pretty cool, me Keith and Chad (the other intern) all went and brought about 20 kids and parents to a ecology/collecting class on south lido beach. We went throughout the water with nets and different stuff to collect a lot of different specimens. We caught so much stuff including a giant jelly fish the size of a basketball. The kids had a lot of fun too and it didnt hurt to get some sun again. Tomorrow should be even more fun.

  10. April 9th 2010 - Today Keith wanted my help at the Venice Fishing Pier to do a Fishing contest that he has every so often. This is what I did my first time going to my intern but we got rained on so this time it was nice and sunny. I ended up catching a big sting ray and Keith wanted to keep it so he could dissect it in the classroom at later times. We also caught a few little fish along with someone on the pier caught a hammerhead shark and Keith asked them to give it to him and hes keeping that as well to dissect it in a small classroom. As an overall it was pretty fun. We stayed there for about 3 hours and just helped out. Then me and Keith loaded up the fish and took them back to his freezer and we are waiting till someone requests a dissection for them.

  11. April 16th 2010 - Today Keith taught a class about birds. I got to be his assistant in the classroom. I got to help out pass out work, and give my input on the topic because I know a bit about birds and Keith doesn't really know much he said. I also had to control about 30 kids and it wasn't too hard. They are all around the age of 5-9 and there was a pond there that had alligators in it so I had to keep the kids away from the water but 30 vs 2 isn't too great of chances. But no one got hurt and they were pretty mature about it all. We ended up doing 2 classes that lasted about 1-2 hours each.

  12. April 17th 2010 - Today Keith had a "Eco-Kids" fossil collection with some kids from his 4-h club. It was pretty cool because a lot of kids showed up and...I didn't have to drive 30 minutes. It was 3 minutes away from my house in North Port. The bad things about the trip was it began at 10:00am in the morning on a saturday... and it was buring hot outside. as it got later in the day. Overall the kids had fun and it was good to see them having fun.

  13. April 22 2010 - Another Collection day. We went to siesta this time. Siesta is always good because of the sand thats there. We didnt really catch anything cause I didn't stay too long. It was my birthday so I left early. We did manage to catch a few needle fish and some pin fish.

  14. April 23 2010 - Yet again, another collection day. Except we went to Keiths favorite collection spot, South Lido Beach. When we go there (me, chad, and keith) we always manage to get so much stuff. Today we got 2 ink fish, which was pretty cool cause the kids love them. They spew out a purple dye into the water and completly turns the water purple. We also saw a dead jellyfish that was huge. We didnt bother with it though because it has been dead for a while and decayed quite a bit. We got a ton of pinfish, literally about 250 but we only kept a few. We also got some needle fish. Was a good day. We also got a horse conch, Floridas state shell. It was a good day.
