Throughout the week I have learned various things throughout the Emergency Room. My doctor that I was shadowing on thursday had drained out an abscess on a woman's ear, checked the same woman for hemorrhoids, and was able to view a few x-rays. On Friday I shadowed another doctor who diagnosed a woman with pneumonia and looked at two really cute kids who were very sick.
This week was a very slow week in the ER in North Port. I was paired up first with Bonnie, then sent over to Dave, and then finally to Terrie. There I spent a little time with Terrie and went to a few patients with her to draw some blood samples. It got to the point where it was so slow that she was looking up a cruise line, Carnival (and I must say their pillows looked mighty soft).
Today was a rather short day, the time went by fast! I worked with a patient in the physical therapy deparment that I've worked with before. She had shoulder pain due to a recent surgery that she had a few weeks prior. The most common type of shoulder pain is the tearing of the muscle. My mentor also taught me that the stretch bands go in order of color: yellow, red, green, blue, and black. We use the stretch bands to help out patients who may have shoulder or back pain.
It was a rather interesting and exciting day in the physical therapy department. I met Mr.Shoop's wife, who was the total opposite of her husband. She was a very kind and gentle lady. We helped out Mrs. Chittister by giving her a few exercises she can work out with at home. If I could I would tell why she was in there but because of privacies issues, I cannot. I also met an old man who thought (and still thinks) that I'm russian because of my last name , haha. Many of the patients that seem to come into the physical therapy department have problems with either their shoulder or back. My mentor taught me several things about the spine as we were conducting the exercises for the patients.
Business was very slow today in the physical therapy department, we saw only 1 patient for the time that I was there (2 hours). Nothing new was learned today, except a learned a few tips from HGTV; the network that was on the television.
4/13 Today I visited the physical therapy section of the Sarasota Memorial E.R. room. There I watched as the my teacher had shown me different techniques to help the lady with back pain on how to soothe them. I immediately gained interest in what was going on that it made me change my career decision in being a physical therapist instead of a physician's assistant.
Today I saw a kid from our school at the E.R. in the physical therapy department. He had minor back pains and I watched Kristy allign his hips and do stretching exercises with him. My day here was short, there were no more patients.
